A
Short History of
The Electronic
Cigarette and other Vaping
Devices.
Early Electronic Cigarettes (2004-2008)
It’s too easy to forget that the first
Patent for Electronic Cigarettes was granted as recently 2004 to Ruyan in China. The technology is brand
new, the market and the user base is growing exponentially.

In common with all new technologies, the
early products on the market (e.g. the Penstyle
or Original DSE
801 aka RN4072) concentrated mainly on function, looking similar to a
cigarette in a holder. Using an
inert steam vapour and dispensing a measured dose of nicotine with an added
flavour of choice instead of the highly toxic, tar laden, smoke produced by
tobacco products, the Electronic Cigarette (or eCig)
proved to be an effective “tobacco harm reduction” alternative for smokers.

As the market developed, manufacturers
attempted to mimic real filter tipped cigarettes and the RN 4081 was created. Quite realistic, with a tip that glows
red as the user inhales. This encouraged many smokers to try “Vaping” (Electronic Smoking) for the first time,
because the product had a familiarity with what they already knew. If you
want an electronic cigarette that looks like a real cigarette, performs
like a real cigarette (without the major associated health risks ) and has a decent cartridge capacity, then the
SUPER (10cm) is the E.Cigarette for you.
By 2007, both the technology and growing
market awareness had developed, becoming increasingly sophisticated. The
similarity of the RN 4081 to “the real thing”, which had appealed to
converting smokers and fuelled the demand for eCigs was now becoming a problem in itself. From a short distance it was difficult
for any onlooker to distinguish the “lookalike Super-Mini” from an actual
cigarette, so
Pubs, Clubs and Cinemas just played safe and banned them.

Demand grew from existing users for a
device which could be clearly recognised by others as not being a cigarette
and so the newly developed DSE 901
Mini eCig, being thinner, longer and generally
more reliable than its predecessor, morphed into multi coloured tubes with
optional black sculpted mouthpieces and an LED tip that glowed bright blue
as the user inhaled. The “Penstyle” and “Super-Mini” models, still popular with
e-cig aficionados soon followed
suit to offer alternative body colours and blue, green or pink tips.
The eCig had evolved to establish and claim its
own unique identity.

From early days, ways to replicate
traditional forms of smoking such as Pipes and Cigars were not forgotten.
In fact, the DSE 601 e-Pipe is, in my humble opinion, the most stylish and
elegant Vaping device yet. The extra size
available to designers gave them the opportunity to experiment with bigger,
more powerful and durable batteries. The RS 888 Micro e-Pipe (aka the
“Lady-Pipe”) followed, with the same Battery Advantages, but the truth is
that it’s really just a DSE 801 eCig Atomiser and
Cartridge with pipe bowl battery holder attached.

The DSE 701 Electronic Cigar is another
variation on the e-Cig theme, offering enhanced battery power and e-liquid
cartridge capacity. This is really more of a big, brown e-Cigarette than a
true e-Cigar and could reasonably be considered to be the forerunner of the
higher powered e-Cigs and hardcore e-NI devices that emerged in 2009 and
2010. The Disposable is a classy e-Cigar. Sold as singles or in boxes of
five, laid out in a row, they accurately mimic the look and feel of the
real thing.
